What:
The ACLU of Mississippi, in coalition with other MS voting rights organizations, will hold a press conference on Monday, August 10 at 11:30, ahead of the House Select Committee on Redistricting hearing, to call for fair maps and transparency in the legislative redistricting process.
Who:
The following spokespeople will make statements:
When:
Monday, August 10th at 11:30 a.m.
Where:
Mississippi State Capitol, 400 High St., Jackson, MS 39201
2nd Floor Rotunda
Why:
The rush to redistrict the legislature and congressional districts is founded on the misconception that Callais made it illegal for legislators to consider race in the apportionment. However, the Supreme Court did not eliminate protections against racial vote dilution under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act—any new map must comply with federal law and respect the ability of Black voters and all communities to elect candidates of their choice. We demand legislators act with fairness and transparency in this process.
