JACKSON, MS – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a core provision of the Defense of Marriage ACT (DOMA) is unconstitutional. Writing for the majority Justice Kennedy, said that section 3 of DOMA “is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment.” The federal government can no longer discriminate against married lesbian and gay couples for the purpose of determining federal benefits.
