The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi’s Legal Internship Program gives law students the opportunity to work with the organization’s Legal Team on a wide range of civil liberties issues. An affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Mississippi is a statewide organization whose office is located in Jackson, Mississippi. Its mission is to promote and defend individual civil liberties through education, advocacy, and litigation.
 
The legal intern will gain:

Responsibilities

As an intern, you will be supervised directly by the ACLU of Mississippi’s Legal Director and work with the entire staff on a wide range of civil liberties issues. Legal experiences will range from legal research and brief writing to assisting with all phases of ongoing litigation. Additional opportunities may include conducting legislative analysis, screening and summarizing client intake, and conducting factual investigations into potential civil liberties violations.

Experience and Qualifications

The internship is open to law students who will have completed at least one year of law school before the internship commences. Interns should possess the following:
  • Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and writing.
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizing and time-management skills.
  • The initiative to see projects through to completion.
  • A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice.
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU of Mississippi. 

Compensation

The legal intern will receive $20 an hour and work 20 hours a week for 12 weeks. The internship could be either in-person or completed remotely, depending on your preference.
