Learn how to request help from the ACLU of Mississipi and submit a civil rights and liberties complaint.
We do not take walk-ins, provide general legal advice, or offer emergency assistance. We also cannot guarantee a phone, text, or email response.
The ACLU of Mississippi’s legal department represents individuals whose civil rights have been violated — most often ordinary people who decide to fight for justice.
We are a private, nonprofit membership organization committed to defending and expanding the rights guaranteed by the U.S. and Mississippi Constitutions. While we work to take on the most pressing threats to civil liberties in our state, we cannot take every case.
Because our staff and resources are limited, we focus on cases that have the potential to create systemic change, not isolated disputes between private parties. This typically includes issues such as discrimination or harassment against a protected class, government misconduct, or constitutional violations.
When you submit a request through our intake form, our Legal Intake Manager will review it. If your situation fits our criteria, you may be contacted for more information. If we are unable to assist, we may refer you to another organization or legal resource.
You may also mail your request. To receive a blank complaint in the mail, please call our office at 601-354-3408 and leave a voicemail clearly stating your name and mailing address.
Submitting a complaint through our intake process does not guarantee that the ACLU of Mississippi will provide legal representation or advice. We receive a high volume of requests each month, and while we are committed to addressing civil rights and liberties issues across the state, we are not able to take on every case.
There are many situations of unfairness and injustice that we cannot handle directly. If we are unable to assist you, we will do our best to connect you with other organizations or resources that may be able to help.
