ACLU of Mississippi Statement on HCR 11

JACKSON, Miss.—Yesterday, the Mississippi House of Representatives passed HCR 11, a resolution that proposes a new ballot initiative process that would greatly limit the scope of initiatives brought by citizens. HCR now moves to the Senate.
The ACLU of Mississippi has released the following statement:
“This plan does not truly restore the ballot initiative process. In addition to banning initiatives dealing with abortion access, it prevents citizens from proposing changes to the Mississippi Constitution and grants the legislature veto power over any proposal brought by citizens. This isn’t direct democracy. We need a true ballot initiative process that would allow voters to propose new statutes and amend or repeal existing statutes.”
