The MS House has sent HCR 11 to the Senate for consideration and a vote. This resolution falls directly in line with our 2024 Legislative Agenda and has the ability to limit the voice of Mississippians.
The purpose of the ballot initiative process is to give citizens the power to propose actions that would improve their community or quality of life. This ability is important because it adds an additional avenue for proposed laws to move beyond the politics of the legislative bias. The Mississippi Supreme Court looked at this process and asked the Mississippi Legislature to correct the number of districts from 5 to 4 based on the census changes.
The House committee decided to add additional provisions of their choosing essentially overstepping the court’s instructions while attempting to mute the voice of Mississippians. Choosing to tell Mississippians you can have this process but cannot ask for things like abortion policy blatantly oversteps the assurance of a fair democratic process.
Contact your senator and tell them this is not the ballot iniatitive process Mississippians need!
