Transparency and Accountability

The ACLU of Mississippi sends our heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. George Floyd and all of his loved ones. His death was an untimely tragedy. We condemn all acts of violence and racism. As an organization founded to protect the civil liberties of Mississippians, we recognize that all police are not racists. We also recognize that the majority of law enforcement officials are dedicated public servants committed to prevention, protection, and service.

We condemn the act of Derek Chauvin and the other police officers who stood by as this heinous crime was committed. There must be an overhaul of our system. The ACLU of Mississippi is committed to working with our law enforcement officials to create trust and transparency in the community.

As citizens of Mississippi and Americans, we must make immediate changes because doing nothing allows more African American men and women, people of color, and marginalized people to be subjected to police brutality and killings without the appropriate repercussions and capacity of accountability. We as a community of human beings must do better.
