With every new human tragedy that arises from unaccountable policing, we see the same common links: aggressive policing of Black and brown communities and little accountability or oversight. Like the rest of the country, Mississippi faces an epidemic of aggressive enforcement and a drought of public accountability. We aim to change that in order to make Mississippi a better place for all of us.

Policing accountability in Mississippi is long overdue. The ACLU of MS calls on state officials to adopt five key reforms to transform policing in Mississippi, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and fair practices that protect public safety and civil rights.

Victory Note: HB 812 mandates that all law enforcement agencies in the state post their asset and forfeiture income online. This legislation was a direct result of our work in creating a task force to review asset and forfeiture actions more transparent. It was signed into law during the 2017 legislative session.
