On July 20-21 at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, the ACLU of Mississippi will host our 6th Annual MS Youth Hip Hop Summit and 4th Annual Parent/Advocate Conference! The Summit is a weekend conference that serves as a venue for awareness of social justice, civil rights, civil liberties, and equips students for leadership and responsibility for better schools and communities. Along with social justice workshops, students participate in creative, hip hop oriented workshops to show the intersection of social justice and hip hop, using the creative elements to create the change students wish to see in their schools and communities.

This conference is geared toward students from 10-18 years old and will focus on issues like:
• School Discipline
• Organizing for Change
• Volunteerism
• Social Media for Social Justice
• Intersections of Discrimination
• Constitutional Rights – how to assert and protect them

The 4th Annual Parent/Advocate Conference occurs concurrently, at the same time and place as the Summit, with a separate, uniquely tailored conference for adults 19 years and older. The conference will focus on creating local and statewide campaigns to protect the Constitutional rights of our students. Students and parents will leave with new and reinforced knowledge, resources, and skills on how to best make the changes they wish to see in their schools and communities.

The Summit will empower students with skills and resources to organize around changing their communities and what they can do about dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline.

In the past 6 years the ACLU of MS has:
• Trained over 400 parents to advocate for their children in the disciplinary process.
• Provided over 1000 students with Know Your Rights Workshops.
• Surveyed students and created a Mississippi Student Bill of Rights.
• Successfully litigated many cases creating policy changes in schools and communities.
