ACLU of Mississippi's 40th Anniversary Celebration, June 25-27

The ACLU is celebrating 40 years of protecting civil rights and civil liberties in Mississippi with a weekend of events. The highlight of the weekend is our 40th Anniversary Banquet on Friday, June 26 at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson. The banquet's keynote speaker will be ACLU national president Susan N. Herman. The night will also honor ACLU clients and activists who have participated in some of our most important work over the years. Entertainment will be provided by Equal Temperament, a dynamic Jazz Band from Ole Miss.

Tickets for the banquet are $35, which supports the ongoing important work of the ACLU in Mississippi. Tickets can be securely purchase online, or by calling the ACLU office at 601-354-3408.


THURSDAY, JUNE 25:

Human Rights film: Straightlaced: How Gender's Got Us All Tied Up

Straightlaced unearths how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are confining American teens. Their stories reflect a diversity of experiences, demonstrating how gender role expectations and homophobia are interwoven, and illustrating the different ways that these expectations connect with culture, race and class.

From girls confronting media messages about culture and body image to boys who are sexually active just to prove they aren't gay, this fascinating array of students opens up with brave, intimate honesty about the toll that deeply held stereotypes and rigid gender policing have on all our lives.

ACLU national president Susan N. Herman will be keynote speaker for the ACLU of Mississippi's 40th Anniversary banquet. The night will also honor ACLU clients and activists who have participated in some of our most important work over the years. Entertainment will be provided by Equal Temperament, a dynamic Jazz Band from Ole Miss.

Ms. Herman, in addition to serving as ACLU national president, is a Centennial Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School and a widely regarded expert on the Supreme Court, particularly in the area of criminal procedure. Herman regularly speaks to judges and lawyers around the country on behalf of the Federal Judicial Center , bar associations, and CLE providers and appears in panel discussions on a range of issues at law schools and other venues.

This will be a fun, relaxed time for old and new members and friends of the ACLU to come together to celebrate 40 years of fighting for Constitutional rights in Mississippi, and look forward to an even brighter future.
